One of the most popular scams you come across is through an e-mail from a person who seems to ask for your help. The story goes like this that a kin of the person has left a large some of money earned through illegal means. He has died and now the person in charge wishes to give it to a charity but requires a foreigner to help him conduct the work. The requirement is that the helper should have a bank account in from where the transaction could take place. If you open an account with a meager sum it would not convince the authorities so you have to keep a large sum for it. When you deposit a substantial sum your money vanishes in air without any traces of it. It is then that you realize the trap.
Giving your own bank account number or any related financial information is suicidal as the scam either dwells on your bank account details or upfront money. You cannot hope to recover the money once you fall a prey to it. The best way to keep away from such scams is to delete any such e-mail that resembles it and inform the local Enforcement Agency about it. Nigerian Advance Fee Scam has victimized many despite of the warnings. The Financial Crimes Division of the Secret Service comes across many calls from its victims but indications are that the people falling for it is going to rise further. Statistics show that the Nigerian scams cost over $100 million to the Americans every year.
