Scams - 809 Numbers

The race of making easy money has resulted in a new scam almost everyday. Often, you come across a message recorded at your answering machine that urges you to make a call at number beginning with the area code 809. The information may relate to an ailing family member, a wonderful prize that you have won, etc., etc. The topic chosen is such that it readily grabs your attention and you make a call to know about its details. Here lies the trap. You get a vague answer either through a recorded message or through a person who speaks broken English to give you the notion that he hardly understands what to say.

The motive behind it is to prolong your call as much as possible so that you could be charged the maximum for it. The bill charged is often times over $100 and sometimes can even range to $2,500 a minute. Frauds are exploiting the number 809 for "pay-per-calls" as the US Regulations have blocked 900. The 809 number falls in the Caribbean region and thus are away from the bindings that caution you about the rate and charged involved in making such a call. The regulation also has provisions that enable you to evade the charge if the call is for a limited period.  

Once you are into the trap of such a scam you cannot challenge them in a court of law as many things go against you. As you did make the call, you cannot expect help from your local phone company or the long-distance carrier. You have to deal with a foreign company that thinks it to be justified in charging you exorbitantly. The best way to avoid such a nightmarish situation is not to respond on a number with the area code 809 if it is not a known one. Do not let them befool you anyway.
