Melvin Powers’s love for mail order started in his teenage. He subscribed to Popular Science magazine and read classified ads at the back. His love for chess made him reply to an ad for chess book. He got it through mail order and then he too decided to sell books through mail order. He started publishing classified ads in his popular magazines- Popular Mechanics and Popular Science and selling chess books. Slowly he expanded with new subjects and new titles.

Initially, Melvin Powers bought books from wholesale publishers and sold them for retail prices with flyers advertising his other titles. This feature is still in use. His initial venture into publishing was through his own book- Hypnotism Revealed, as he wanted to earn total sales proceeds instead of receiving a small amount as royalty.  

Melvin Powers then purchased paperback rights of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and has since sold million copies of paperback editions. All his books are in a trade paperback format, which makes it easy to fit the books into supermarket and drugstore racks. He has also taken up the paperback rights of Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. This book records a steady sale with sales touching more than five million copies. Albert Ellis and Robert Harper and Psycho-Cybernetics prods Melvin to sell more of inspirational and self-help books.

Melvin Powers always visits bookshops often to locate successful books for publishing through his company. He could develop paperback rights for horse books two decades back. Later, he sold them through mail orders, bookstores across and and at important riding goods trade shows. Similarly, he also published Tommy Boyce’s text- How to Write a Hit Song and Sell It. He also forayed into writing songs with Boyce and made it big in western charts. He received award for his song - Who Wants a Slightly Used Woman.
