Compared to a printed book, e books have several advantages. The text can be searched and modified and it occupies less space. It can be carried everywhere and the text can be adjusted for the correct reading size. They can be shared across networks and made available to several people simultaneously at a low cost. They can be bundled with text-to-speech software. They offer an opportunity for radical authors since most of the publishers are independent publishing houses.
However, there are a few drawbacks with e books. One must have the compatible hardware, most importantly a computer and software to read an e book. E books have to be handled and stored carefully to minimize damage. They can be modified without the author’s permission. It may not be suitable for formats with huge images and illustrations.
E books have to be promoted well enough to be successful. The first step is to identify the target audience. The subject book should be of interest to a particular segment of readers to ensure that they read it. One must create a website containing the author’s background and credentials as well as updates on the book. The publisher must arrange for the author to be interviewed by a reputed e-zine, online bookstores or websites, which enjoy a good readership. The book must be showcased at trade shows coupled with e-book signing sessions and a panel discussion with eminent personalities. One can create awareness by sending e-mail newsletters to the target audience. It also pays to get good reviews for one’s e-book by sending the reviewer’s an advance copy of the e-book before its publication. One must write articles to trade journals on topics relevant to one’s e-book, which can help in its publicity.
Participating in discussion groups and newsgroups can generate positive views and news about the e-book since the participants in these discussions are other like-minded authors, publishers, critics and readers. Thus, one can ensure the success of one’s e-book by engaging in an image building exercise so that its readership is ensued among the target audience.
