Self-hosting or Virtual hosting are the methods that are used. Virtual hosting is either name based or IP address based. The most basic type of hosting is file hosting or Web page hosting. Web pages and other files are uploaded via FTP or a Web interface. Web hosts like GeoCities and Yahoo! offer services to upload homepages. Web page hosting is usually free, advertisement sponsored, or cheap, and includes image hosting in different formats.

To host complex sites, a more comprehensive package of database support and application development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, and ASP.NET) is required. Clustered hosting is better as it offers the benefits of a dedicated server, but at affordable prices. Then there is reseller hosting which is designed for those who want to become Web hosts themselves. One gets a large amount of space and bandwidth that can be divided up among as many sites as the user wants to put on his account. Virtual Private Server or Virtual Dedicated Server hosting enables one physical server to house several virtual environments. It behaves exactly like an isolated stand-alone server. It is a much more affordable solution than a dedicated server is. Normally, it offers all the benefits, such as root access. While, dedicated hosting getting a server of one’s own, but at a significant price. Colocated hosting too is an expensive proposition.
